Keloid Scarring

A keloid (also called a keloid scar) is the name given to a scar that overgrows and becomes larger than the original wound.

Keloids are enlarged, raised scars. They can be skin-coloured, pink, red, maroon or just generally darker looking than the surrounding skin. They usually feel firm and smooth and look shiny and hairless.

A keloid can appear within 3-4 weeks of a skin wound occurring but can take a year or longer to appear. The lesion may then continue to grow in size for months or even years. Multiple keloids may develop, especially after acne or chickenpox, although most people only have one or two at a single time.

Initial assessment

In order for the correct procedure to be recommended, it is important for you to have an accurate diagnosis of the lesion being removed. For any surgical procedure we undertake at the clinic, an initial assessment by a dermatologist is performed. During this assessment, a medical history is taken, the lesion is examined and a diagnosis made. The options of treatment can then be discussed so that you are aware of the risks and benefits of all the surgical treatments available.

Surgical Procedure

To treat a keloid, an Injection of a steroid is administered into the scar i.e. intralesional injection. This is the most common treatment. Injections can be repeated if required e.g. monthly for 4-6 months. All injections are performed by a highly qualified doctors who have extensive surgical and dermatological experience.
