A lipoma is a non-cancerous (benign) fatty lump that usually causes no symptoms or problems. Lipomas often form in the fatty tissue under the skin. These lesions are often quite noticable, as they look and feel like soft, dome-shaped lumps under the skin. They vary in size ranging from pea-sized to several centimetres in diameter.
The most common sites for lipomas to develop are on the shoulders, the chest and the back.
Most lipomas are small and can be left alone. However, a lipoma that develops under the skin can sometimes look unsightly and if required, it can be removed by a simple minor operation performed under local anaesthetic.
In order for the correct procedure to be recommended, it is important for you to have an accurate diagnosis of the lesion being removed. For any surgical procedure we undertake at the clinic, an initial assessment by a dermatologist is performed. During this assessment, a medical history is taken, the lesion is examined and a diagnosis made. The options of treatment can then be discussed so that you are aware of the risks and benefits of all the surgical treatments available
All surgical procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, so you can eat and drink as normal on the day of your surgery appointment. ESS Clinic has a purpose built treatment room where surgical procedures are undertaken. All procedures are performed by a specialist doctor who has extensive dermatology and skin surgical experience.
All surgical procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, which numbs the area that is being treated. The local anaesthetic can sting for about one to two minutes but then the procedure should be pain-free.
All procedures are performed by experienced doctors who have had extensive training in Dermatology and skin surgery. Please go to the Team page of the website for further details about the doctors working at ESS Clinic.
In most cases, you can return to work immediately. Most lesions will have a dressing applied prior to you leaving the clinic that will need to be in place for 24 hours post surgery.
For all minor surgery procedures (except skin tags), it is essential that the lesion removed is sent for histological examination. This involves the lesion being sent to a histopathologist who will examine the lesion under a microscope. A written report will be provided to the clinic and you will be informed of the results of your procedure within a few weeks.
Usually, the maximum number of lesions that can be removed in one treatment session, is two. However, if you require more than two lesions to be removed in one surgical appointment, please discuss this with the doctor during your initial consultation. Exception to this is skin tags, where several can be removed at one time.
Once you have had your surgical procedure, you will be provided with verbal and written advice on how to take care of your wound. If you have had stitches, a follow up appointment will be booked for you to have these removed at the clinic.
